The best time to visit the Serengeti depends entirely on what you want to see. For Mara River crossings, travel late July to October. For the calving season and predator action, travel late January to March. For value with excellent resident game, travel May, June or November.

The migration follows rainfall on a roughly clockwise circuit through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem.
- January – March: Southern plains (Ndutu). Calving peaks in February; highest predator density of the year.
- April – May: Long rains. Herds drift west and north. Lowest prices, lush landscapes, some camps close.
- June: Western Corridor and Grumeti River crossings. Dry season begins; excellent value.
- July – October: Northern Serengeti and Mara River crossings. Peak season, peak pricing, book 9–12 months ahead.
- November: Short rains. Herds return south. Superb shoulder-season rates.
- December: Southern Serengeti gathering. Festive-period surcharges apply.

The Serengeti sits at 1,500m, so days are warm (25–29°C) and nights are cool (13–17°C) year-round. Pack layers regardless of month — dawn game drives are genuinely cold in an open vehicle.
The long rains fall from mid-March to May, usually as heavy afternoon storms rather than all-day drizzle. Short rains fall in November and rarely disrupt a game drive.

July to October and the Christmas period are the busiest and most expensive weeks. April, May and November are quietest, with rates 25–40% lower. If your dates are flexible, early June and late November offer near-dry-season conditions at green-season prices.
