Which coast to base on, how to split your time between Stone Town and the beach, and the bookings you should make before you fly.
Zanzibar is small — only 85 km from north to south — but it changes character every twenty kilometres. The west is Stone Town: spice trade, Arab mansions, Forodhani night market. The north is white sand and dhow trips. The east is reef, kite-surf, and seaweed farmers at low tide.

How to split your time
Two nights Stone Town, four nights on a beach is the sweet spot for a first visit. Add two extra nights if you want a day on Mnemba or a sandbank picnic.

Choosing your beach
Nungwi for swimmable water at any tide and a livelier vibe. Kendwa for the sunset. Matemwe and Pongwe for quiet. Paje and Jambiani for kite-surf and seaweed-farming culture. Michamvi and the south-east coast for the most cinematic light.
