Packing for a Tanzania safari

What to bring, what to leave, and the little details that make the bush more comfortable.

Soft-sided duffel only — light aircraft on internal hops cap luggage at 15–20 kg total, hard suitcases don't fit.

Neutral colours (khaki, olive, tan). Skip bright white and dark blue/black — blue attracts tsetse flies.

Layers: cold pre-dawn game drives, hot midday, cool nights. A fleece, a light down jacket and a wind/rain shell cover everything.

A wide-brim hat, polarised sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen and a refillable water bottle.

Binoculars (8x42 is the safari standard), a headlamp, and a small power bank for camera batteries.

Skip: heavy boots (light trail shoes are enough), camo (illegal to wear in many African countries), and most 'just in case' items.
